IMPORTANT UPDATE!! TO PREVIOUS REPORT OF SANTA’S CRASH

Today, a Star’s Rescue Helicopter (North Pole Division) arrived at the previously reported Santa crash.

According to an unidentified source at the North Pole, the rescue was delayed when they had to divert to Ottawa to pick up the Minister of Defense, Peter MacKay, as he wanted to take part in a “Rescue Training Mission” here in Alberta. The source went on to say that Mr. MacKay was particularly worried about Santa being able to complete his rounds on December 24th, as Mr. MacKay had put in a special request to Santa for an updated budget and delivery schedule for the 65 new F35’s that the Government had ordered. When contacted, the Canadian (Harper) Government had “No Comment”. As of this time, we have not been able to verify the presence of Mr. MacKay on this flight nor the amount of the extra budget assessed to the North Pole Division of Star Rescue to cover the extra flight times to Ottawa and back. Again, “No Comment” from the Canadian (Harper) Government.

When contacted Zeke, the helicopter pilot, stated that they were anxious to begin their assessment of the damage to the sleigh, reindeer and of course Santa, but a preliminary examine indicated the damage is minimal and the operation to dig Santa out will begin immediately.

We will keep you informed of any further details.

University of Milo offers unique degrees

Our friends over at the Vulcan Advocate have posted a great article on the U of Milo. Go check it out!

Universities offer degrees in subjects like physics, history and English, but only one post-secondary institution doles out an actual degree in b.s.

The tongue-in-cheek University of Milo, a creation of Milo-area resident Greg Deitz, also offers a Super Hero Institute of Training, among other courses.

“We’re going to have a bit of fun with it,” said Deitz during an interview with the Advocate.

Applicants can go online, fill in a in a tongue-in-cheek application and enrol.

The U of Milo is actually on the comeback as Deitz, 52, came up with the idea 29 years ago while living with a couple of buddies who were attending the University of Alberta.

At its peak, the U of Milo had 321 students in seven countries —long before the internet age began.

But now with Vulcan County municipalities rebranding their communities, Deitz received encouragement from Destination Development and interest from the Village of Milo.

“The town has recognized there may be potential” for tourism development, said Deitz, who owns the copyrights to U of Milo.

While it’s just a fun idea, not designed to generate publicity for Milo, it could have potential to do just that, said Deitz.

“It’s a fun, harmless thing that could be something more,” he said.

But he didn’t revive the U of Milo as a way to rescue Milo Community School, where enrolment has been declining the past few years.

“I wouldn’t go that far,” he said.

Students can enrol themselves, friends and pets on sports teams, like the women’s synchronized swimming team.

“That’s what it’s all about — a good giggle,” said Deitz.

As more people sign up for sports teams, TV sports stories will be written about those teams, he said.

People will able to buy merchandise — hats, shirts, jerseys — to support the U of Milo, he said.

The U of Milo will be offering a unique gift package, consisting of a baseball cap, enrolment in one of six courses, and a laminated student ID card.

Deitz, who was involved in melding Vulcan to the Star Trek theme, says he wants to similarly build the U of Milo idea from the ground up, without advertising and with interest from media outlets.

“It’s a funny enough story that they’d throw in at the end of their newscasts,” said Deitz.

In addition to the University of Milo, Deitz has started up the Milo News Network (MNN), which features amusing stories from the community and university.

On Oct. 3, MNN reported on the tragic death in Milo. The victim was described as being seven-inches tall with light brown hair and two big front teeth.

“One witness claimed they were pretty sure it was a member of the Richardson Family,” said MNN.

A news report of the death was reported on the University of Milo’s Facebook page.

Research at the U of Milo has discovered that the village has ghosts, an exclusive MNN documentary that can now be found on YouTube.

“It’s only limited by the imagination,” he said.

Deitz wants to find an international tractor he can park on the street in Milo for the official international headquarters of the U of Milo. Anyone who happens to have a tractor not in use — it doesn’t have to work — and wants to donate it can reach Deitz at profg@uofmilo.com.

Whether local residents agree or disagree with the University of Milo idea, the concept fits in well with the village’s plans to capture the community’s spirit as a place that embraces fun, adventure and humour, said Katie Walker, a Village of Milo councillor.

“The University of Milo is just a part of it,” she said. “Whether you agree with it or not, it does capture our sense here.”

The University of Milo tested the highest among the ideas given to Destination Development by the community’s branding committee, and the Village will be partnering with Deitz, she said.

“Greg has lots of ideas and we’ve got ideas too,” said Walker.

When visitors talk to her about their experiences in Milo, their comments are invariably that they enjoy their time there and have fun, she said.

In light of the work done to rebrand Milo, now is the time for the village to evolve, she said.

“It will be a work in progress for the next five to 10 years,” said Walker, who acknowledges that not every idea surrounding the rebranding initiative will work.

It will take hard work from positive, upbeat and patient people in the years ahead for the community to write its next chapter, said Walker.
